This article shows how to customize the Pediatric Drive Layout in Ability Drive®.
For Occupational Therapists, Assistive Technology Professionals, and other clinicians working with new users, especially pediatrics, it may be helpful to further simplify the Pediatric Drive Layout in Ability Drive®.
To customize the three-button Ability Drive® Pediatric drive screen for younger users, clinicians can access the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File and edit the values for "PedsLayout" and "PedsNoCamera" These settings are not available in the standard user interface and must be edited manually.
Step 1:
First, install Ability Drive® onto the eye-gaze device by visiting our website, https://www.tolt.
When the download completes, click "Open file". An Ability Drive® shortcut can now be found on the Windows Desktop.
Step 2:
Open the Ability Drive® app. The app must be run once after installation to create the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File.
Step 3:
Navigate to the folder where Ability Drive® is installed. On an A13J, the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File is found in the Documents folder.
Open the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File.
using Notepad or another plain text editor.
Important: Do not edit the file Type BAK File, as it is a backup of the default Ability Drive® settings.
Step 4:
Edit the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File in the following fields, noting the different values and their function below:
"PedsNoCamera"
Purpose: Disable the forward facing camera view for simplified use.
Accepted values: "true"
or "false"
Example: "PedsNoCamera": true (the camera view will NOT be displayed on the drive screen).
Purpose: Modify the control layout to reduce button options.
Accepted values:
0
= Traditional pediatric layout: Forward, Left, Right, Pause
1
= Left/Right only (spin in place), no pause button.
2
= Forward only, no pause button.
Example: "PedsLayout": 1 (the drive screen will include a forward drive arrow only).
Step 5:
After making the changes to the AbilityDrive SETTINGS File, save the Notepad file. This will apply the changes to the Ability Drive® app.
Example: "PedsLayout": 2,
PedsNoCamera": true, (see screenshot below).
Note: These settings are optional and should only be adjusted by clinicians working with pediatric clients. For standard users, the default layout remains unchanged.
